| Rainy Day at the 36th African Junior Championships - Day 3 |
Very wet weather ruled out any play on the third day of the 36th African Junior Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.
The wash out follows a compelling day of action on day two as Ghana’s Isaac Nortley became the only unseeded player to reach the quarterfinals of the U16 boys draw. Nortley stunned seventh seed K Motlojoa of Lesotho in the first round en route to the last eight, which reflects last week’s results in the warm-up event in Kenya with all the other seeded players through.
Malawi’s Chisomo Lumeta took part in a nail-biting match against fourth seed Amine Ahouda of Morocco. After two hours and 36 minutes and having had four match points at 5-1 in the third set, Amine eventually won the match on his seventh match point to complete a 64 26 63 victory.
Two non-seeded players cruised into the quarterfinals in the Under 14s event. Madagascar’s M. Rakotondramboa beat ITF Centre player Seydou Aliyou of Niger 63 63, while Jason Ah Chuen of Mauritius upset eighth seed Nassim Fenjiro of Morocco 62 60.
Amongst the girls, all U16 seeded players cruised through in straight sets. Ghanaian seventh seed Elizabeth Kapari beat Zimbabwe’s Nicole Dzenga 76(7) 63, fifth-seed Zani Barnard of South Africa crashed out against Diae Eljardi, of Morocco, in a two-set match 62 64.
In the U14s event, three unseeded girls secured a spot in the quarterfinals, which begin on Thursday after Wednesday’s washout.
