This year’s Edition of the 18 & under African Junior Championships was hosted by Tennis South Africa, North West University and the Riaan Venter Tennis Academy in Potchefstroom, South Africa. The Host Nation and Egypt dominated this Edition of the ITF/CAT 18 & under AJC. This ITF Grade B2 Event featured players from 18 Countries across Africa, with 45 Boys and 37 Girls taking part. Although this is an Individual Event for valuable ITF Jnr Ranking Points, the players also accumulated points towards the AJC Team Trophy. The AJC for players 14 & 16 and under will take place in Nairobi, Kenya in March where the winning Team will be announced.
In the Boys singles division, home favourite Wayne Montgomery beat Mazen Osama from Egypt 67(7) 62 62. The boys Doubles was also won by Montgomery and his partner Matthew Rossouw (RSA) who beat the South African Twins, Okkie and Francois Kellerman 75 62.
The Girls singles final saw another Egyptian and South African clash between Sandra Samir (EGY) and Lynn Kiro (RSA). Samir took the title with a 64 61 victory over Kiro. The Girls doubles final was also an all-South African affair, with the pairing of Jessica Simpson and Janet Koch taking top spot over Theresa van Zyl and Lynn Kiro.
After the Singles finals on Saturday Tournament Director Mr Riaan Venter (Riaan Venter Tennis Academy) welcomed the following guests of honour: Mr Ismail El Shafei (ITF Board Member for Africa), Mr Dave Miley (Executive Director of Development for the ITF), Mr Nelson Amanze (CAT Vice President and CAT President of Zone VI) and Mr Ian Smith (CEO of Tennis South Africa). Mr Venter also thanked TSA and NWU, Ms Helene Botha as well as the Referee Iain Smith and then introduced Mr Ismail El Shafei. In his speech Mr El Shafei thanked the Organisers; Tennis South Africa, North West University, the Riaan Venter Tennis Academy and Tournament Referee Iain Smith. Mr El Shafei also made a special mention to the players, commending them on the high standard of play observed during the week.
The ceremony concluded with the handing over of trophies by Mr Ian Smith, Mr Nelson Amanze, Mr Miley, Mr El Shafei and Mr Venter.
